Wassa East NPP Constituency Elections Heat Up Ahead of 2026
The race for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency chairmanship in the Wassa East Constituency is gradually becoming one of the most talked-about internal political contests ahead of the 2026 elections.

Historically, Wassa East was part of the former Mpohor/Wassa East Constituency, which served as a stronghold for the NPP for several years
However, during the administration of the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, the constituency was divided into two separate constituencies, Mpohor and Wassa East.
Since the creation of the Wassa East Constituency in 2012, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has maintained dominance in both parliamentary and presidential elections within the area
Currently, tensions are rising within the NPP as the incumbent Constituency Chairman, Isaac Kwabena Kwakye, faces a strong challenge from the Constituency Secretary, Anthony Kessey, ahead of the upcoming constituency elections
Political Performance and Internal Dynamics
Anthony Kessey entered the constituency executive leadership in 2018 as the Youth Organizer. He later became actively involved in the party’s 2020 campaign efforts under parliamentary candidate Hon. Wilson Arthur, who was contesting for the third time.
Anthony Kessey first joined the constituency executive in 2018 as the Youth Organizer.
During the 2020 general elections, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Hon. Wilson Arthur, who was contesting for the third time, secured 18,929 votes, while the NDC candidate, Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah, obtained 21,714 votes.l
In 2022, leadership changes occurred within the constituency. Isaac Kwabena Kwakye became the Constituency Chairman while Anthony Kessey served as Constituency Secretary.
According to internal investigations by Skyy Newsroom, tensions reportedly emerged during the campaign of the NPP parliamentary candidate, Gertrude Effah Mona.
Sources indicate that Anthony Kessey was sidelined from the campaign team, a development some party insiders believe negatively affected the party’s performance

The widened margin of defeat has sparked debates among party faithful, with some attributing the poor performance to internal divisions and the exclusion of key party figures from campaign activities.
